Gundersen Health System is seeking a part-time Paramedic to join our highly committed and dynamic Emergency Services hospital team as we provide excellent quality care to over 65,000 patients of all ages annually.Prior work experience in an emergency or pre-hospital setting is strongly preferred.

What You Will Do?

As a Paramedic you play a direct role in saving the lives of our patients each day by serving our patients in a safe environment promoting long-term recovery. In this department, Paramedics are expected to perform with a high degree of clinical and professional aptitude while helping deliver patient care as part of a professional multidisciplinary team of Providers, RNs, Paramedics, EMTs, Respiratory Therapists, Health Unit Coordinators, Social Workers, and more.

Emergency Services, a Level II ACS-verified Trauma Center, is a high-energy, patient-centered environment providing excellent quality care to over 65,000 patients of all ages annually. This department consists of 45 total patient exam rooms including ten Urgent Care rooms, five resuscitation/trauma/critical care rooms, and three dedicated Behavioral Health rooms. Patients have 24-hour access to laboratory, X-ray, and surgical services. We are also a Stroke Center with 24/7 neuro-interventional capabilities and a Chest Pain Center with 24/7 interventional cardiac catheterization lab capabilities. Emergency Services is recognized and acknowledged for excellence throughout the department through metrics and patient experience that is difficult to find anywhere else in the nation. In 2023, we also were an Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award recipient.

What's Available:

  • Part-time, 60 hours biweekly (0.75 FTE)

  • Will orientate/train as close to full-time as possible for 8-12 weeks

  • 12hr night shifts (7p-7a) with every third weekend/holiday rotation

  • Starting pay of $23.41/hr and up, based on your years of experience, along with generous shift/weekend/holiday differentials

What You'll Need:

  • Post High School education in a specialized field: completion of an approved paramedic program by the State of Wisconsin

  • Valid Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic - Wisconsin (EMT-P) or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (NREMT-P) or Critical Care Paramedic Endorsement (CCEMT-P)

  • Current Infant-Adult Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Minimum of 6 months prior direct patient care experience required

  • Prior emergency or pre-hospital experience is strongly preferred

Job Description:

The Paramedic functions as a collaborative team member under the supervision of the RN in performing delegated medical and nursing functions. The Paramedic assists in the treatment and care of patients of all ages in accordance with established policies, protocols, and standards to provide quality care.

Major Responsibilities:
1. Assists and collaborates with the RN and other members of the healthcare team in delivering patient care in an emergent or urgent setting.
2. Administers prescribed medications under the direct supervision and/or delegation of the RN. May participate in monitoring the administration of blood products but may not initiate.
3. Demonstrates effective communications skills within the healthcare team. Documents interventions, data, and patient response accurately and concisely, in a timely manner.
4. Demonstrates knowledge and use of appropriate equipment including that used for defibrillation, pacing and cardioversion. Responds to Code Blues according to policy and provides monitoring, defibrillation and other skills measures as directed.
5. Works as a member of the trauma team, performing technical skills in the care and treatment of patients with multiple injuries including management of advanced airways.
6. Provides specialty care services as required including, but not limited to EKGs, blood glucose testing and use of intoximeters.
7. Creates and maintains sterile fields and assists physicians with sterile procedures.
8. Responsible for IV starts in the unit including, but not limited to IV site selection, catheter selection, establishing and maintaining flow rate.
9. Provides information for cast/splint care and maintenance, Foley care and maintenance, and provide crutch/cane/walking training.
10. Maintain responsibility for collection of Department of Transportation (DOT) and non-DOT specimens for drug testing per policy as well as conducting breath alcohol testing during off hours to fulfill contracts between Gundersen Business Health and local businesses. Must maintain competency in the proper specimen collection as well as documentation. This is done in La Crosse only.
11. Works with EMT/Paramedic students and/or orientees to supervise their education experience and deliver of optimal patient care.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
13. Maintains patient confidentiality.
14. Maintains positive communications with patient care departments in regards to patient care and related concerns. Develop ongoing relationships with area EMS and Law Enforcement Center.
15. Participate in quality improvement activities in order to continually improve patient care health outcomes and unit operations. Participate in staff meetings.
16. Demonstrates role accountability by adhering to Gundersen Health System mission statement, policies and confidentiality statement.

Education and Learning:
REQUIRED
Post High School education in a specialized field: completion of an approved paramedic program by the State of Wisconsin

DESIRED
High School Diploma or equivalency + completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program or completion of basic EMT class

Work Experience:
REQUIRED
6 months Prior direct patient care experience.

DESIRED
6 months Related work experience.

License and Certifications:
REQUIRED
