  • The Admission Team Nurse manages the care of the newborn baby from birth until transfer to the appropriate nursery and serves as a resource to the Family Center Care Staff Nurse regarding the care of the infant.
  • Provides primary care to newborn babies.
  • Applies the nursing process to assess low to moderate risk newborns to include APGAR scoring to determine the status and need for resuscitation immediately at birth.
  • Provides resuscitation as needed according to Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) guidelines.
  • Performs a biophysical assessment.
  • Review maternal history for risk factors that could impact newborn care.
  • Obtains initial measurements, lab, and point of care testing (i.e. birth weight, head circumference, length, vital signs).
  • Provide treatment (s) according to medical provider orders (i.e. Erythromycin Ointment, Vitamin K Injection, and Glucose Gel).
  • Initiates appropriate consults as indicated.
  • Provide education to mother and/or care partner on medication side effects and plan of care.
  • Provides education to mother and/or care partner about newborn safety and security.
  • Provides education to mother to assist with skin to skin, initial latch and breast and/or formula feeding.
  • Completes the initial newborn bath as indicated.
  • Documents care and education in the electronic health record.
  • Demonstrates ongoing and annual competency.
  • Assists with orientation of new staff.
  • Actively participants in staff meetings and other hospital committees as needed.
  • Demonstrates service excellence behaviors consistently to all customers, i.e., coworkers, patients, visitors, physicians, ancillary staff, etc.
  • Maintains certification in Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP).
  • Maintains certification as a Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC).
  • Performs other duties needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  1. Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  2. Licensed as a RN in the State of Georgia in good standing without limitations.
  3. Must hold Certified in American Heart Association's Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED:

  1. BSN degree
  2. Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN).
  3. Additional Life Support credential (ACLS, PALS, NRP, etc.) or other clinical specialty certifications in specific units.
  4. Visual color acuity depending on the role in specific units.
