The approximate duration for this temporary role is 12 months.

The CARE Advocate is a member of the Vice-Chancellor's Office of Diversity and Outreach at UCSF. This position exists to provide confidential and privileged advice, assistance and advocacy on behalf of individuals concerning sexual violence, sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. Advocacy includes assistance in coordinating services with local agencies on behalf of the subject in all areas, including Student Services, faculty staff assistance, the local campus police department, coordination of legal advocacy, medical advocacy and other assistance/University services as needed. The advocate participates in educational outreach services to diverse university populations including students, staff, faculty and the local community.

UCSF seeks a technical leader with a high degree of knowledge in the overall field and recognized expertise in specific areas. Given the nature of the work and constant problem-solving challenges, the incumbent is required to have the ability to analyze unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure.

This person typically works on highly complex issues with complainants of sexual violence, assault, stalking or domestic violence. Situations generally require decisions on matters that may be unique, complex, without precedent or may require quick thinking. Able to formulate strategies to best serve the complainant's interests in immediate and long-term resolution of their situation. Leads other staff in developing effective outreach campaigns and may manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy.

Incumbent is also required to have experience in developing and conducting trainings on Sexual Harassment Violence and Prevention, incivility as well as other topics including the university's principles of community. In fulfillment of that need, in depth experience with computer programs used in the university such as word, excel, PowerPoint, case tracking systems and other key programs is necessary to perform the requirements of the position.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling or related field (sociology, social work, psychology, public health)

Preferred Qualifications


  • A qualified psychotherapist with a master degree in counseling or has one year of counseling with six months rape crisis experience

If not already trained and in possession of the following certifications, within the first 60 days of hire, the incumbent shall complete:
  • 40 hours of state recognized sexual assault certification training (California Certification for Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor Training).
  • 40 hours of state recognized domestic violence certification training (California Certification for Domestic Violence Advocates)
  • Minimum 20 hours specific training related to stalking
