Position description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites tenure-track faculty applications in the area of Integrated, Autonomous Construction and Infrastructure. Hiring will be at the untenured assistant professor level. This position aligns with the Department's Strategic Plan that prioritizes:

* Smart, Sustainable Cities and Regions

* Adaptive and Resilient Infrastructure

* Sustainable Air, Soil, Water and Energy Resources

Autonomy in construction and infrastructure is revolutionizing the way we design, construct, maintain, and operate infrastructure and is an integral part of adaptive, sustainable and resilient infrastructure. It enables integrated, system-level sensing, analysis and optimization that will promote resiliency and sustainability in a wide array of civil engineering domains. As the boundary between design, construction, and operation blurs, new approaches to construction, management, and engineering of infrastructure are needed. The area of this search includes, but is not limited to: autonomous construction operations, human/machine production, construction and operation systems, next-generation multi-scale infrastructure systems, and digitally fabricated, reconfigurable or redeployable materials and structures.

We seek candidates who will lead civil and environmental engineering in the area of infrastructure and construction autonomy. Programmatically, this search area encompasses critical needs in CEE that relate to resiliency and sustainability. A successful candidate will be expected to interface with the College of Engineering faculty's existing strengths in autonomy, robotics, and infrastructure.

New faculty are expected to pursue research excellence and contribute to the existing undergraduate and graduate educational program in Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as develop new and innovative courses. They are encouraged to collaborate with faculty throughout the Department, the College of Engineering, and the UC Berkeley Campus.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core values at UC Berkeley, and is a focus of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and academic and non-academic staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our academic positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

UC Berkeley is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We encourage candidates to apply who have had non-traditional career paths, who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit: https://ofew.berkeley.edu/new-faculty.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. Consistent with this commitment, UC Berkeley requires all applicants for Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload an Authorization of Information Release form into AP Recruit as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, applicants will only be subject to reference checks if and when they are selected as the candidate to whom the hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer.
