Position Summary

About CASA Tutoring: The Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA) is dedicated to providing tutoring and supplemental instruction to help you succeed in your academic endeavors at UNM-Taos. Services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis and are free of charge. Tutoring is provided by trained peer tutors in both small group and individual sessions. Tutors participate in training activities to hone specific skills to better assist students engage and understand the curriculum. Individual learning differences are acknowledged and valued at the CASA.

Peer Tutors will assist students in improving academic achievement by:

* Providing appropriate individual and small group tutoring to students in assigned areas.

* Supporting the development of an organized study plan for students assigned to them.

* Participating in all scheduled staff meetings, training program, and in-service education as designated by the staff.

* Meeting with students on a regular basis to clarify concepts and work on study skills.

* Serving as a model (academically, promptness, dedication) for students being tutored.

* Collaborating with the students to determine the academic needs of assigned students.

* Documenting tutorial objectives, activities, material needed, and assessment of the tutorial assistance.

* Maintaining exact records of tutoring sessions.

* Planning and conducting discipline-specific workshops.

* Other duties as assigned.

Tutoring sessions should include, but not limited to the following: review of class material, discussion of the text, predict test questions and create study aids, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Tutors are not expected to know everything about the subject for which they tutor. Employment as a tutor does not guarantee a minimum number of work hours. Work hours will be based on program needs

Preferred Qualifications

* Be degree seeking

* Be a UNM-Taos students enrolled in 6 credit hours or more during the academic semesters

* Have earned a minimum of 3.0 GPA in the tutoring area applied for in this application

* Attach 1-2 letters of recommendation from a professor when applying, OR provide the names and contact information of 1-2 professors who can serve as references.
